Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco - Mendoza
Vintage Notes
A remarkably dry year, with rainfall below historical averages, created concentrated grapes with outstanding potential. The months leading to harvest were marked by the hottest minimum temperatures in a decade, with intense heat during the day. Cooler weather in February prompted a carefully planned harvest schedule to ensure optimal ripeness. By early March, the grapes were in the winery, ready for their journey into exceptional wine.
Vineyard
Sourced entirely from Uco Valley, this Malbec comes from high-density vineyards in La Consulta and two Tupungato regions. These alluvial soils are gravel-rich with abundant limestone, providing the perfect foundation for vibrant, expressive wines. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure quality and precision.
Winemaking
Grapes from each vineyard are vinified separately to preserve their unique characteristics. After double selection, they undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small stainless steel tanks at 24-26°C for 15 days. The wine is aged for 18 months: 75% in concrete vats to preserve purity and 25% in large, untoasted oak foudres for complexity, followed by six months of bottle aging.
Tasting Notes
This Malbec is a vivid reflection of the Andes’ freshness and Uco Valley’s elegance. Deep red with bordeaux accents, it reveals aromas of plums, cherries, quince, eucalyptus, and a hint of green pepper. Juicy and intense on the palate, it features fine, limestone-textured tannins and a fruity, saline finish. Ideal with Mediterranean dishes or perfectly cooked red meats.
